ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name? How old are you? What country are you born? Where do you live now?
My name is Kathie Khalakdar and I am 58 years old. I was born in Chicago, Illinois and now live in Orland Park a suburb of Chicago.
When did you start with this hobby? How did you start?
I started beading about 15 years ago and then wanted to incorporate lampwork beads into my designs, but could not afford to buy everything that I liked, so I decided to learn lampworking. I happen to have quite a few hobbies, quilting, stained glass, ceramics, polymer clay and needlepoint. It was while attending a needlepoint workshop that some of the girls were making peyote amulet bags and I had to know how to do this. This was the start of my obsession with beading.
Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
I have taken many classes with various artists, but I have to say that Cynthia Rutledge, Laura McCabe and Diane Fitzgerald have influenced my designs.
How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
I stitch every day in the evening and take as many classes with famous bead designers that I possibly can. I am fortunate to have a local bead shop that offers many classes with such people. I own almost every bead book and my friends will tell you that I am always changing a pattern or design. When I get a needle and thread in my hand, I let it speak to me and am always asking myself...what if I do this, what will happen?
Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
This is really a hobby for me and have not concentrated on selling my jewelry, but do make pieces for my daughter or friends. I did teach some of my designs at a local bead shop that is now closed. I do share my designs with my beading group. Last year I was fortunate to have one of my designs, Triangulations, in Beadwork Magazine, Feb/March, 2010 issue.
What other hobbies do you have?
I have many hobbies, some I have mentioned above and also do Metal Clay, Silversmithing, Scrapbooking...I love the creative process of all my hobbies. I also love to travel and read.
Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
As I told you I am 58 years old, married, and have two wonderful daughters and two beautiful grandchildren. I live with my husband, one of my daugters and two little yorkies. I have a craft room in the house and a lampwork studio set up in my basement.
