ENTREVISTA
¿Quieres decirnos tu nombre?
Cheryl Rabe

¿Cuántos años tienes?
38

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
Cheryl Rabe

How old are you?
38

What country are you born?
I was born in Namibia, in southern Africa.

Where do you live now?
I have been living in Australia since 2003. I live in the beautiful river city of Brisbane.

When did you start with this hobby?
I have been creating things since I was a child - jewelry, paper craft, rubber stamping, knitting, fimo clay and more. I've always loved making things by hand.

How did you start?
I'm actually quite a shy and reserved person and I think I first started creating jewelry for myself as a way of expressing my fun side. My designs were always big and bright and a little bit 'out-there'. When I was a teenager I used to make fimo clay earrings for myself that were as big as saucers. One day my sister and I decided to sell some of our handmade things at a market. I sold a pair of earrings to a local news presenter and she wore them on the evening news! It was quite a turning point and I'm still flattered that other people like my creations as much as I do! When I came to Australia I discovered the joys of internet shopping and being able to have access to beads of all shapes and sizes from all over the world. It inspired me to start creating again and now the ideas just don't stop!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
My first beadweaving design was inspired by Japanese designer Emi Takamatsu. I have since been inspired by Laura McCabe's designs with Swarovski crystal and books by Jean Campbell. I also want to say that I am inspired by the many beautiful designs shared by the Flickr community!

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
About 8-10 hours. I try to make at least two new pieces a week for my online shop.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
As much as I love creating my jewelry I don't think I ever want it to be my job. For me it has always been my meditation, a way to relax and escape from the craziness of everyday life. If I had to create things to earn an income it might take away the fun and inspiration. I have two part-time jobs as an office manager and a treasury assistant, so I think I have a really good balance between work and play!

What other hobbies do you have?
I love reading, especially true crime and thrillers!

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I've been married for 5 years to my wonderful husband David, who is very supportive of my hobby and very proud of my creativity. He's also my biggest critic and recently told me that my new designs are better because my previous ones were 'too floppy'! We don't have children but are parents to a very spoiled cat named Archie, who also loves to play with beads. My mother, my sister and my sister-in-law are my biggest fans and at least one of my creations gets worn by them everyday.I am so grateful to my parents for passing on their creative and artistic talents - my father produced incredible oil paintings, water colours and sculptures, and my mother can not only draw and paint, she can also sew, knit, crochet and bake the most amazing cakes!I sell my creations in my Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/afrikitten?ref=si_shop and also have a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Afrikitten/110360938981907
