***The Justified Sinner***

Dauvit Alexander, The Justified Sinner

¿Cuántos años tienes?
46

¿País de nacimiento?
Scotland, UK

¿País de residencia?
Glasgow, Scotland, UK

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
Dauvit Alexander, The Justified Sinner

How old are you?
46

What country are you born?
Scotland, UK

Where do you live now?
Glasgow, Scotland, UK

When did you start with this hobby? How did you start?
Well, I don't really view this as a "hobby". For me, this is how I make my living, so it is more essential than that. I started by working at the bench for John Gilchrist in Bothwell, Scotland, when I was 14. It was just a summer holiday job - John was a friend of my mum's - and it grew from there. I have no art-school training and, in fact, originally set out to be a landscape architect and have a degree in landscape architecture, which I discovered that I hated!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
My main inspiration comes from the largely anonymous Renaissance jewellers who created things like the Canning Jewel, which makes this question very difficult to answer!
If I had to NAME some people, they would be:
1) Kevin Coates. I don't actually like everything that he makes, but I admire his skill and vision more than any other maker of jewellery. His approach to narrative is very similar to my own but his style is so very different. Both of us draw on the Renaissance jewellers for our main inspiration.
2) Rob Jackson: I would never have thought to use corroded steel in my work if I hadn't discovered Rob Jackson's pieces. Once more, we are poles apart in terms of style, but his technical skill in using these discarded materials is phenomenal.
3) Alexander McQueen: I was actually very upset when McQueen died. Though he was younger than me, his work over the last ten years has has a monumental influence on my own, especially the very dark Renaissance elements which he made acceptable to the general population. Although he is viewed as a bit of a dystopian, his bleak sense of humour appealed to my own.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
Hours Per Week!
As I said before, this is my job and I have both my own workshop practice and I teach as well. My working day starts at about 6am and I am in the workshop by 7am at the latest, working through most days until 7 or 8pm. From 8pm until 10 or 11pm, I spend doing research or relaxing. I spend the weekends on any engraving or carving that needs to be done in my home engraving workshop.

What other hobbies do you have?
I read a lot and have a passion for music, which ranges from early music to the most avante garde electronics. At the moment, I am fanatically exploring 1950s Hard Bop Jazz and I have a perennial love for the music of Henry Purcell. I enjoy cycling and cross-country running - though don't do as much as I used to as I've become really busy.
