***Social Butterfly Jewellery***

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name? How old are you? What country are you born?
My name is Melissa Ingram and I am 43 years old and was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia (1967).

Where do you live now?
I currently reside in Melbourne, Australia but will soon be moving to Brisbane, Queensland.

When did you start with this hobby? How did you start?
I remember the first day I passed by a bead store in Fremantle, Western Australia. I went in and found hundreds of jars of beads and I was hooked, that was nearly 20 years ago now. I was just a 'stringer' of beads till about 5 years ago when I discovered 'beading with a needle and thread' and that was when I truly fell in love with beading.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
My absolute beading idols are all American gals .. Laura McCabe, Diane Fitzgerald & Marcia DeCoster. I have been lucky enough to attend a beading workshop with Laura last year and this month am booked in for two workshops with Marcia.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
I bead everday, whenever I can .. I was recently on holiday and I took a 'beading pack' away with me so that I could bead whilst away. I bead at least 40 hours a week, even more If I have a large commission or beading magazine deadline.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
It is no longer a hobby but I do not consider it a job either. I write and design project articles for Australian Beading magazine, teach beading privately and sell my work through several boutiques and a gallery here in Melbourne.

What other hobbies do you have?
My other hobbies are all of a creative nature. I love working with polymer clay and precious metal clay, usally creating pieces to incorporate into my jewellery designs. I collect vintage Swarovski crystal beads & stones and unusual buttons. I am in love with most things vintage. There is something about vintage items .. perhaps that they have a past .. not sure exactly what the attraction is, but it is there and has been since I was a little girl. I remember exploring my Grandads attic in England and my Great Aunts rooms and her jewellery box. I loved the smell of musty air with excitement rising at the prospect of finding something wonderful amongst old and dusty, sometimes rusty boxes or cases. I collect vintage and antique beads and they too hold much more for me than modern or new beads. I hope you continue to enjoy my beadwork I know I will enjoy creating it.
