ENTREVISTA
¿Quieres decirnos tu nombre?
Carol Holmes

¿Cuántos años tienes?
48 años.

¿País de nacimiento?
Estados Unidos.

Comencé a leer la revista “Bead and Button” y estudié tutoriales online. Nunca he tomado una clase, soy completamente autodidacta.

Mi abuelo y mi padre me enseñaron a reparar y hacer violines.

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
Carol Holmes

How old are you?
48 years old

What country are you born?
USA

Where do you live now?
Near Washington, DC

When did you started with this hobby?
I started beadweaving in 2001 and started selling my work in my co-op gallery, Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery, in 2003. Later I joined a second co-op, the Artists’ Undertaking.

How did you start?
I teach violin for a living and a student gave me a gift of a small beaded butterfly. I wanted to learn how she made it, so her mother bought me the book called “Beadlings” (part of the Klutz book series). I learned to make the beaded insects and figures in the book using craft wire, but I wanted to learn more. I started to read “Bead and Button” magazine and studied online tutorials. I never took any beadweaving classes, I’m completely self-taught.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
Zoya Gutina, and all the wonderful artists of the Etsy Beadweavers Team (there are just too many to name).

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
5-10 hours usually, a couple hours per night.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
This is still definitely a hobby. When people ask me about my beadweaving, I tell them my “real job” is as a self-employed musician (which is no more secure !).

What other hobbies do you have?
Knitting, crochet, sewing, weaving…any fiber art, plus I love to collect vintage clothing.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I come from a family of violin makers. My grandfather and father taught me how to repair and make violins. I worked for the family business for many years, and did all types of repairs on violins, violas, cellos and basses. In addition to violin, I also play the viola and harp and sing in early music choral groups. I love world music and for two years, I studied Balkan vocal techniques and sang in a Bulgarian women’s choir. I also learned to sing in Finnish as a member of a Finnish folk music choir. Later, I learned how to play samba-reggae music as a drummer in an all-women’s Brazilian percussion band. Who knows what musical direction I will take in the future, but my beads and crafts will be with me all along the way.
