***Modeste Parisienne***

He estado casada dos veces.

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
My name is Catherine Leon

How old are you?
Shhhh! 40 something, lol,...! ; )

What country are you born?
I was born in France but spent part of my childhood abroad.

Where do you live now?
I live with my family in a coastal village in the gorgeous state of Maine, USA. We have two children and two large dogs.

When did you start with this hobby/job?
Creating jewelry was a hobby only briefly when I started 5 years ago. I knew very early on that it would be my job.

How did you start?
By accident. I had intended to start a business and was looking for interesting products to sell. One day in Paris, I found some great necklaces which reminded me of Chanel but very modern and young. They were too expensive for me but looked very simple to make. I decided I'd try to make my own. Little did I realize then that I had opened Pandora's box and that jewelry would become a consuming passion!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
There are no three artists in particular...it's more nebulous...more about what gives me the right state of mind.
One place would be the big houses of jewelry whose creations past and present provide me with great visual references.
Another source of creativity for me comes from the daily interactions with my artisan friends. Together we truly create trends while keeping our distinctive voices. In that rich environment I feel very motivated to push myself, very energized. A very good thing!

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this job?
24hrs/7 days a week, lol, or at least it feels that way. The actual creation of my pieces represent about 15-20 hrs/week. The rest is more about the details of running a business, including promoting. This part is encroaching more and more on the creative and I am looking at ways to re-establish a better balance.

What hobbies do you have?
My hobbies tend to revolve around jewelry: taking a workshop or two in metalsmithing or reading about gems/geology. I don't have too much time for other things but if I had, I would love to do some: gardening, skiing, hiking with my dogs, surfing, traveling...and maybe also lay down on the sand and do nothing, lol!

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
Mmmm, where to start?
I am a sunny woman yet I am the black sheep of my family which perceives me as brilliant and a f..k up. Both untrue, but I let the first perception stand, he,he!
I HATE all sodas which to me taste like sparkling cough syrup.
One of the happiest period of my life was spent in Tahiti. My parents’ life of incessant partying let me and my two siblings grow like forgotten weeds . A good thing ! I spent all my time writing books, “publishing” a newspaper and exploring the surrounding mountains barefoot. I became a very creative wild urchin.
I went almost overnight from total freedom to the strictest boarding school. We had to curtsy , we were not allowed to talk for most of the day and all personal expression was strongly discouraged. The shock was so great that I developed some psychosomatic problems. On the plus side, it has led me to always question authority.
Strange: I am shy, do not like the spotlight but I can speak before a big crowd without any problem whatsoever.
I think of myself as American.
I was a vegetarian for 10 years but find that I feel better with animal protein.
At 16, I ran away , was caught within a few hours and spent a night in jail while waiting for my parents to come and get me.
If I were an animal, I’d be a bird. Sometimes eagle, more often chickadee.
Between the age of 16 and 19, I spent my summers hitchhiking across North Africa and traveling in India/Nepal/Ladakh.
I have been married twice.
I don’t read fiction or at least not much beyond Harry Potter. Fiction makes me sad; I don’t want to feel for people who do not exist. I feel already too much for the living and at least there I know I can make a difference. I prefer philosophy, history, current events. Actually I occasionally read plays or short stories, probably because they are short.
I am now over 40.

If left to my own devices, I am never bored, EVER! Actually I wished we lived 150 years, because there is an awful lot I still want to do and I am rather slow.
I am confused by right and wrong; I prefer beautiful and ugly. My beautiful covers some of your “wrong” and my ugly covers some of your “right”. Organized religion is not for me; besides , I am not convinced that there is anything else beyond this wonderful life.
I like the slow life.

Thank you so much ladies! Your lovely comments are very heartwarming!

I must also congratulate you for remaining awake though such a long interview, LOL! In truth, I had given Bead Perles a link to 16 facts about myself. I did not expect that the whole text would be posted...and translated. I hope though that my long rant was fun enough to read! :-D
