Estaba deprimida y
me sentía mal conmigo misma.
Laura McCabe, Gailavira, Sabine Lippert

How did you start?
I was recovering from complications of childbirth and on a leave of absence from my regular work as a doctor of children (pediatrician). I was depressed and feeling poorly about myself. During this time I walked into a local bead shop that I'd never had time for during my busy life as a doctor. I started stringing and then started adding seed beads. Within a few months I had discovered a local seed bead shop with a wonderful teacher. Within 5 months of beading I was creating my own designs. In 2009 I started teaching at that same shop. Two years later the shop was closing and I purchased the name and beads. I left my career as a doctor and set up my own shop. I am now a full time bead shop owner and teacher at Poppyfield Bead Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I can see mountains from my living room window, and a
beautiful night sky, and they inspire me in my creations. Beadwork has
been my vehicle for recovery and well-being since 2002. Teaching beadwork
is another form of practicing medicine. I feel helping others to create beauty
and express their innermost creative selves heals the spirit and nourishes the
soul. This can be the most important part of wellness.
