Cuéntanos como empezaste.
Mi madre estaba en coma en el hospital después de un trágico accidente de coche. No se esperaba que sobreviviera, pero mi familia y yo no nos íbamos a dar por vencidos. Hablábamos con ella diariamente y no dejabamos su cama.
Siendo una artista me encontraba inquieta y frustrada y necesitaba una válvula de escape mientras estaba allí con ella. Compré una cuentas en una tienda de abalorios local y comencé a jugar con ellas mientras trataba de ayudar a mi madre.
Tres meses mas tarde ella estaba fuera del hospital y se encontraba bien ¡¡¡y yo tenía una nueva forma de arte!!! Las cuentas!!

Me siento muy afortunada de poder hacer lo que hago y vivir de ello. Enseño bordado con cuentas a lo largo de Estados Unidos y es muy gratificante. No solo es maravilloso compartir mis conocimientos, sino que además he hecho legiones de maravillosos amigos gracias a ello.

How did you start?
My mother was in a coma in the hospital after a tragic car accident. She wasn't expected to survive, but my family and I wouldn't give up. We talked to her daily and wouldn't leave her bedside. Being an artist I was restless and frustrated and needed an outlet while I was there with her. I bought beads at a local bead shop and began playing with them while trying to help my mother. Three months later she was out of the hospital and doing well and I had a new artform!!! Beading!!

How many hours a week do you dedicate to beading?
50 plus

Yes...it's my business

Painting and working with clay

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I feel very blessed to be able to do what I do and make a living doing it. I teach bead embroidery across the U.S. and it is very rewarding. Not only is it wonderful to share the skills, but I've made legions of wonderful friends thru it all.

Bastantes horas al día.

Es mi trabajo, pero tengo un santo patron.

Dibujo un poco. Soy medianamente buena en la cocina también.

¿Quieres contarnos algo mas de tu vida?
Siempre me han gustado las joyas y me encanta hacer cosas. Siento que el tipo de joyería que hago es un cruce entre la construcción de algo y algo de escultura. Me gusta forzar la máquina y ver cuán lejos puedo llegar haciendo piezas bellas, con luz y elegantes esculturas.

Me encantan los engranajes y las pequeñas piezas móviles. Adoro las ferreterías y las máquinas. Así que a menudo fabrico joyas que tienen algo de mundano y muestran su belleza oculta. También me gustan las formas naturales - las ramitas, flores, vainas de semillas, etc me inspiran mucho las cosas que veo en mis paseos diarios.

He descubierto que una cosa es crear por el mero placer de hacerlo (lo que es muy gratificante), y otra cosa es tratar de llegar a la verdad sobre uno mismo y expresarlo con claridad y originalidad a través del trabajo propio. Si la libre expresión es la verdadera meta, entonces debemos preguntarnos un montón de preguntas difíciles. It's my job, but I have a patron saint.

I draw a bit. I'm wicked good in the kitchen too.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?

I’ve always loved jewelry and loved making things. I feel the type of jewelry I make is a cross between building something and sculpting something. I like pushing it and seeing just how far I can go with making beautiful, light, elegant sculptural pieces.

I love little gears and little moving parts. I love hardware stores and machines. So I’m often making jewelry that takes something mundane and shows it’s hidden beauty. I also love natural forms -- twigs, blossoms, seed pods, etc. I’m very inspired by the things I see on my daily walks.

I have found that while it's one thing to craft purely for the pleasure of it -- and it is very pleasurable, it's another thing to try to get to the truth about yourself and to express that clearly and uniquely through your work. If self expression is the true goal, then you must ask yourself a lot of tough questions. That can be a very personal and at times lonely journey, but also a deeply satisfying one.

Un primo tenía una caja de cuentas así que me senté a jugar con el. Fue tan relajante y gratificante que se me pegó!

Este es mi trabajo ¡Se van tantas horas al día en ello!

Me gusta leer. Cuido gatos y una cacatúa. ¡Adoro los museos también!

¿Quieres contarnos algo mas de tu vida?
Yo creo que la uniformidad y la conformidad están sobrevaloradas, que menos es menos, en el valor de lo único, lo individual, lo ornamental y simple, y en la humanización del arte.

He estado haciendo manualidades durante tanto tiempo como puedo recordar, con los abalorios durante cerca de 15 años y deleitándome con los diferentes materiales, nuevas técnicas, la imaginación y la inspiración.

Las piezas de thebeadedlily generalmente se dividen en tres categorías.

Encadenados (enfilado simple): Llamativos, llenos de color, diseños cargados de texturas, a menudo influenciados por los artistas y artesanos que crean las cuentas con las que trabajo.

Trabajo con alambre: Sencillo, limpio y muy primitivo. Yo uso antiguas técnicas de trabajo con alambre y aspiro a conseguir la apariencia de lo que fué la primera joyería, para crear algo atemporal, como lo que encontraríamos en un museo de antigüedades.

Trabajo con cuentas: Piezas de arte totalmente únicas y originales.

Cuando empecé a vender las piezas era entre mi familia, amigos y amigos de amigos. No fue hasta que me enteré de que podía vender on-line que mi arte realmente despegó. Encontré Etsy en enero del 2007 y abrí una tienda allí seis meses después. A principios de 2008 renuncié a mi trabajo diario y descubrí que podía hacer lo que me gustaba para vivir. Registré thebeadedlily como un negocio en enero de 2009 y desde entonces he abierto tiendas en ArtFire y 1000Markets además de mi tienda Etsy.

Cuando no estoy trabajando estoy durmiendo, leyendo, bebiendo café mientras navego por cosas hechas a mano en Internet, tomando el té con los amigos, abrazando a mi gato, Rip, mi cacatúa Mirkah o el roedor residente, frecuentando un bar de sushi o lidiando con mi familia.

I was on my early teens.

How did you started?
A cousin had a bead box that I sat and played with. It was so relaxing and rewarding that it stuck!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
Alphonse Mucha for one. Any artist whose beads I work with. And so many ancient and primitive artist whose work I delight in.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?

This is my job, so many hours a day go into it!

What other hobbies do you have?
I love to read. I keep cats and a cockatoo. Love museums too!

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I believe that uniformity and conformity are overrated, that less is less, in the value of the unique, individual, ornamental and simple, and in the humanity of art.

I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember, beading for about 15 years and delighting in different materials, new techniques, imagination and inspiration.

Pieces by thebeadedlily generally fall into three categories.

Stringing: bold, colorful, texture laden designs, often influenced by the artists and artisans who create the beads I work with.

Wirework: simple, clean, and highly primitive. I use ancient wire-working techniques and aim for what the earliest jewelry must have looked like, to create something timeless, like what you'd find in a museum's antiquities exhibit.

Beadwork: totally unique and original one of a kind art pieces.

When I started selling pieces it was to family, friends, and friends of friends. It wasn’t till I found out that I could sell on-line that things really took off for my art. I found Etsy in January of ‘07 and opened a shop here six months later. Early in 2008 I quit my day job and discovered that I could do what I loved for a living. I registered thebeadedlily as a business in January 2009 and I've since opened shops on ArtFire and 1000Markets in addition to my Etsy shop.

When I'm not working I'm sleeping, reading, drinking coffee while I surf handmade on the internet, taking tea with friends, cuddling my cat, Rip, my cockatoo Mirkah or the resident rodent, haunting a sushi bar or puzzling with my family.

Whatever I'm doing I carry with me my love of the art of personal adornment. I love its history and I look forward to its future.

Beads are art in miniature, which I love! I thrill to wear something that is mine alone, and I want you to as well! And that's the why of it. Love.

A este hobby, le doy todo mi tiempo libre. La mayor parte del tiempo trabajo de noche, cuando el resto de mi familia duerme.

También me gusta mucho esculpir con arcilla polimérica. Pero con un niño pequeño en casa ahora mismo no lo hago.

Tengo 2 hijos, mi hija mayor de 12 años y mi hijo de 2 años y medio. Paso mucho tiempo dedicado a su educación. Pero encuentro el tiempo para dedicarlo a este hobby. Me gustan las piedras bonitas y la plata. Me gustaría probar a trabajar con oro, pero por ahora no puedo permitírmelo.

How did you get started?
I started creating sterling silver jewelry and participating in shows in the Midwest. I then selling to stores, galleries, and doing home shows. I have been creating the hardware jewelry for about 2 years, and selling it online for just over a year. I started this collection, because I wanted to create a fun, trendy, and inexpensive that everyone could afford.

That is a hard question. There are so many artists famous and not so famous that inspire my work. If I had to choose one, it would be Alexander Calder.

He hecho algo creativo y artístico toda mi vida. Me ENCANTA hacer cosas con mis manos. Hice algo con rocallas cuando era una joven adolescente, y en 1990 hice un poco de alambre.
Hace un par de años, estaba en una feria de la mujer y ví algunas joyas hechas con alambre, y pensé, "Oh, se supone que debo hacer joyas." No sé de dónde vino. Comencé a trabajar con alambre y metal pero no estaba contenta con el proceso, con los resultados o con mi falta de talento en esa área.

Entre 20 y 70 horas dependiendo de lo que pasa en mi vida en ese momento.

Ahora mismo, lo considero mi vocación. No gano mucho dinero, pero adoro crear estas piezas de adorno.

Pasar tiempo con mi familia, cocinar, pasear, el yoga, la danza, algo de punto y ganchillo.

Me gusta crear mis adornos con cuentas por dos razones. Uno de ellos es que me encanta la teatralidad, el drama y la fantasía de la moda y la exaltación de la belleza y la de nuestros entes corporeos. When did you started with this hobby? How did you started?
I have done something creative and artistic my entire life. I LOVE to make things with my hands. I did a little with beads as a young teen-ager, and in 1990's a little, just some wirework. A couple of years ago, I was at a women's fair and saw some wire jewelry, and thought, "Oh, I'm supposed to make jewelry." I don't know where that came from. I started with wire and metal and just wasn't happy with the process, my results or my lack of talent in that area. A teacher in a wire and seed bead class asked why I didn't try seed beads since I love color and stitching so much. So, I started out and realized that I LOVE it absolutely.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
Right now, I love the beaded sculpture of Gail Gorlitzz, the music of Bjork, and the theatrical performance art of Lady Gaga.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
20-70 hours depending on what is going on in my life at the time.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
Right now, I consider this my vocation. I don't earn much money, but I love to create these pieces of adornment.

What other hobbies do you have?
Time with my family, cooking, walking, yoga and dance, some knitting and crocheting

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I love creating my beaded adornment for two reasons. One is that I love the theatricality, drama and fantasy of fashion and the celebration of beauty and of our bodily selves. The second is that many of my pieces are transformational healing journeys through memories, stories, dreams, myths, and emotions, also meditations on just what is possible in this moment.

Hace alrededor de 15 años conocí a un capitan de yate que llevaba un brazalete de cuentas que llamó mi atención. Fué un regalo de un amigo cercano, me contó, y lo único que sabía acerca del brazalete es que era de ganchillo. Con un amigo averigué como se hacía, y después de hacer un montón, pensé, tiene que haber mas formas de utilizar cuentas y no solo simplemente enfiladas o cosidas o con ganchillo.

No hay muchos artistas que me inspiren. Me siento inspirada por las formas, los colores, los materiales y las estructuras.

I start seriously beading round about 12-15 years ago.

How did you started?
Round about 15 years ago I´ve met a yacht skipper and he´s wearing a great beaded bangle wich catches my attention. It was a present from a close fiend, he told my and the only thing he knows about it was, it was crochet. With a friend I find out how it was made and after making a lot, I thought, there must be more ways to use beads than just stringing, sewing or croching them.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
It´s not that much artist inspiring me, I feel inspired by shapes, colours, material and structures.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
Sorry, I can´t tell by hours how many times I spend with my jewelry. If I´m real into an exiting project it could be more, but if I´m busy with other things, my beading needs to wait.

Mi nombre es Evelyn Markasky y cumpliré 55 años el 4 de marzo.

¿País de nacimiento? ¿País de residencia?
Nací en Ohio y mis padres eran griegos de primera generación. He estado viviendo en Santa Cruz, California los últimos 30 años con mi esposo, 3 hijos (de edades 18, 20 y 26), ¡y 2 locos perros de raza Boyero Australiano!

¿Cuánto hace que empezaste con esta afición? Cuéntanos como empezaste.
Me gradué de la universidad en 1978 con un BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts - Licenciatura en Bellas Artes) en escultura. Hice joyería y trabajo con metal y también pasé mucho tiempo en fotomatones!
Luego tuve 3 hijos, lo que frenó mi carrera artística un poco, pero me dio la oportunidad de experimentar con diferentes tipos de arte y manualidades como la pintura en seda, arcilla, acuarela ... En los últimos 8 años empecé a asistir a algunos talleres sobre trabajo con metal y mi adicción ha vuelto! Mis técnicas favoritas ahora mismo son foldforming (técnica de trabajo con metal que consiste en doblar y desdoblar las planchas de metal), esmaltado, y repujado (técnica de trabajo con metal que consiste en trabajar con planchas para obtener un dibujo ornamental en relieve).

Los 3 artistas que me inspiran más son Marcel Duchamp, por su irreverencia sobre el arte, Andy Warhol porque creía que todo el mundo debería ser capaz de hacer arte, y Deborah Lozier porque cree en el proceso de crear y me enseñó esmaltado.

¿Cuántas horas dedicas a la semana a esta afición?
¿Cuántas horas a la semana? Bien, en una buena semana alrededor de 15, ¡¡si puedo dejar el ordenador!! (¡Esos malditos juegos adictivos!) También tengo 3 o 4 puestos de trabajo a tiempo parcial para ayudar a mantener mi vida y mi adicción al metal en Santa Cruz.

My name is Evelyn Markasky and I'll be 55 on March 4.

What country are you born? Where do you live now?
I was born in Ohio and both my parents were 1st generation Greeks. I have been living in Santa Cruz, CA for the last 30 years with my husband, 3 sons (ages 18, 20, and 26), and 2 crazy Australian Cattle dogs!

When did you started with this hobby? How did you started?
I graduated from college in 1978 with a BFA in sculpture. I did jewelry and metal work and also spent a lot of time in photobooths! Then I had 3 children, which slowed my art career down a little, but gave me an opportunity to experiment with many different types of art and craft like silk painting, clay, watercolor... In the last 8 years I started taking some metal working workshops and my addiction has returned! My favorites right now are foldforming, enameling, and chasing & repousse.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
The 3 artists that inspire me the most are Marcel Duchamp because of his irreverence about art; Andy Warhol because he believed everyone should be able to do art, and Deborah Lozier because she believes in the process of making AND taught me enameling.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
How many hours a week? Well on a good week about 15, if I can get off the computer!! (It's those darn addictive games!!) I also have 3 or 4 part time jobs to help sustain my life and metal addiction in Santa Cruz.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
I like to think of it as more than a hobby. My life would be very cold if I didn't have the ability to create and share art with my family and friends. It's really more of a necessity to help make sense out of this chaotic world.

I also like to draw and do calligraphy AND cook!

My name is Sandy Caufield.

How old are you?
I am almost 60 years old and have been crafting most of my life.

What country are you born? Where do you live now?
I was born in Jamestown, New York, USA and still live near there. I am of German, Swedish and Native American descent.

When did you started with this hobby? How did you started?
I started crafting as a child and continued with it through college where I became a Registered Nurse. Sewing, beading and other crafts got me through some very tough times while working as and RN. I retired from nursing in 1996 to devote myself entirely to my crafts.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
Two of my favorite artists are Sandra Halpenny and someone I know only as "Dragon". Their designs are wonderful. A third "person" and probably the most influential, is the entire Native American beading community. I love their designs and trying to recreate some of them is what got me started as a beader.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
I spend many hours a week crafting. I don't count them, or keep track of how many I spend doing what.

What other hobbies do you have?
Along with beading, I also do Hardanger embroidery, crochet, knit and whatever else suits my fancy at the time.

I sell my creations online on Etsy and Art Fire and at a local co-op market. It is more than just a hobby for me. It is a passion, and my income.

I first started creating wearable art using zippers in 2002 and it grew into a business in 2003.

How did you started?
I made the first Zipper Pin in 2002 for myself and received many compliments. I then made Zipper Pins as gifts for family and friends. They were noticed by a school friend who was opening up a new jewelry boutique in Brooklyn and she placed an order. Her shop was visited by "New York Magazine" and then my Zipper Pin was featured the "Best Bets" section of the September 2003 issue of the magazine. One experience lead to the next and the interest grew from there.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
I admire the milliner, Phillip Treacy for his outrageous designs and flair. I admire my mother, Margaret Cusack who is an accomplished illustrator (www.margaretcusack.com) and who is a great inspiration creatively and an endless resource. I admire my friend, the art-jeweler, Margaux Lange (www.margauxlange.com) who has created an incredible collection of jewelry made using pieces of barbie dolls and sterling silver.

I dedicate nearly all waking hours since my Zipper Jewelry is not a hobby, but rather is a job.

YES! I am very lucky to be able to support myself with my creativity.

Yes, it is a part-time job for me. I have another part-time job: I am a sociologist specialized in media sociology and I work for a publishing house as a market researcher.

What other hobbies do you have?

Mi nombre es Zuleykha McMillan.

¿Cuántos años tienes?
Tengo 30 años.

¿País de nacimiento?
Nací en la URSS (para ser precisa en Kazakhstan, cuando todavía era parte de la URSS). Cuando tenía 13 años me mudé a Rusia y viví allí otros 11 años en una ciudad llamada Kazan.

Ahora vivo en Newcastle upon Tyne, Reino Unido.

¿Cuánto hace que empezaste con esta afición?
Me compré un montón de arcilla para las navidades de 2008. Desde entonces mi adicción a la arcilla solo crece ms fuertemente.

Cuéntanos como empezaste.
Por casualidad me encontré fotos de algunas magníficas creaciones de arcilla polemérica en Internet. Me interesé en este medio y empecé a buscar más información sobre la arcilla polimérica. Encontré un gran número de sitios web dedicados a arcilla, tutoriales y galerías, y pasé medio año simplemente navegando y aprendiendo la teoría del arte de la arcilla polimérica, en realidad antes de comprar arcilla para mí. Empecé con la fabricación de algunos cilindros geométricos simples, a continuación, algunos cilindros de flores. La técnica de milflores fué la más emocionante para mí en ese momento.

¿Cuántas horas dedicas a la semana a esta afición?
Estoy creando con arcillao haciendo algo relacionado prácticamente todas las noches 2 o 3 horas al día.

¿Te dedicas profesionalmente a esto?
Esto es sólo un hobby, por ahora. Desde que me convertí en miembro de un grupo de artesanos entusiastas llamado Newcastle Craft Mafia hace cerca de medio año, estoy de vez en cuando tratando de vender mis joyas y botones hechos a mano al público en nuestros mercados de artesanía.

¿Qué otras aficiones tienes?
Hacer cuentas y la escultura con arcilla polimérica es tan abrumadora, que se lleva todo mi tiempo y no me deja ni lugar y ni momento para cualquier otro pasatiempo.

¿Quieres contarnos algo mas de tu vida?
Estoy casada con un hombre maravilloso, no tenemos hijos todavía, pero tenemos un hermoso conejo y un par de hámsters como mascotas. Mi trabajo diario es como profesora de química en la universidad local.

Would you like to tell us your name?
My name is Zuleykha McMillan.

How old are you?
I am 30 years old.

What country are you born?
I was born in USSR (to be precise - in Kazakhstan, when it still has been a part of USSR). When I was 13 I moved to Russia and lived there for another 11 years in a city called Kazan.

Where do you live now?
Now I live in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

When did you start with this hobby?
I have bought myself a lot of clay for Christmas 2008. Since then my addiction to clay only grows stronger.

How did you start?
By accident I found pictures of some gorgeous polymer clay creations on Internet. I got interested in this media and I started searching for more information about polymer clay. I found a great number of clay-dedicated websites, tutorials and galleries, and I have spent half a year just browsing them and learning polymer clay art theoretically before actually buying clay for myself. I started with making some simple geometrical canes, then some flower canes. Millefiori was the most exiting technique for me at that time.

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
It is so hard to choose only three names! There is a lot more artists I would like to say "thank you" to. I want to thank everyone who writes about polymer clay, who shares their works and ideas. I would like to mention Jael Thorp (from jaelsjewels) since her beautiful 3D millefiori works have fascinated me at the very start and inspired me to search for more polymer clay art. Donna Kato is always a great inspiration for me, whatever she does in clay. Marcia (marsdesign on Etsy) with her fantastic polymer clay canes is a master, a benchmark in millefiori for me. I also want to thank Edit Zoota for her amazing "play-doh" technique.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
I am creating with clay or doing some hobby-related thing almost every evening two or three hours a day.

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
This is just a hobby for now. Since I became a member of a group of enthusiastic crafters called Newcastle Craft Mafia about half a year ago, I am occasionally trying to sell my handmade jewellery and buttons to public on our craft markets.

What other hobbies do you have?
Making beads and sculpting with polymer clay is so overwhelming, that it takes all my time and does not leave place and time for any other hobbies.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I am married to a wonderful man, we don't have children yet, but we have a beautiful bunny and a couple of hamsters as pets. My day job is teaching chemistry at the local University.
