ENTREVISTA
¿Quieres decirnos tu nombre?
Jennifer VanBenschoten

¿Cuántos años tienes?
37 (¡Menuda gracia!)

¿País de nacimiento?
EE.UU.

¿País de residencia?
EE.UU.

ENTREVISTA ORIGINAL
Would you like to tell us your name?
Jennifer VanBenschoten

How old are you?
37 (yikes!)

What country are you born?
U.S.

Where do you live now?
U.S.

When did you start with this hobby?
I actually started playing with beads and buttons when I was a kid - maybe 4 or 5 years old!

How did you start?
I started making jewelry when I was a little kid, thanks to my mom who was a crochet and knit designer and always had lots of fun stuff for my sister and I to play with. All through school, I experimented with different styles of jewelry made with all types of different materials - paper, clay, glass - but I always came back to my beads. Then, in college, I received another gift from my mother - a pair of beadwoven and bead embroidered earrings, and I was inspired to learn how to do beadweaving. I scoured the internet for anything I could find, and then bought a book about amulet purses. (This was back in 2000, and amulet bags were enjoying a sort of renaissance in the U.S.) From there, I taught myself brick stitch, square stitch, herringbone stitch, right angle weave and spiral rope - but I struggled so badly with peyote stitch that I finally broke down and took a class!

Who are three artists who inspire you the most?
I've always been inspired by the artistry of Marcia DeCoster. Her colors and her forms made with right angle weave are always making me think about new ways to approach beading and design.
Carol Dean Sharpe is another huge inspiration to me. While I don't necessarily enjoy creating graphic and charted patterns, Carol's designs are absolutely amazing - they always seem to be absolutely perfect, and they are absolutely a joy to stitch.
And I'm always inspired by the stoneware beads and cabochons of Lisa Peters Art. Lisa's colors, shapes and forms are really what drive a huge part of my work. I find something irresistible about using another artist's handmade work in my own. And Lisa's colors and glazes are really unlike anything I've ever seen anywhere else.

How many hours a week do you dedicate to this hobby?
As many as I possibly can! It's not always easy to find the time, since I am a happily married mom of a very active 3 1/2 year old little boy, and I want to spend as much time as I can with my family. But very often I find myself beading into the wee hours of the morning when everyone else has gone to bed!

Is this more than your hobby? Is it your job?
This is also my job. After I had my son, my husband and I decided that it wasn't worth it for me to go back to my "real" job, where I was working as the executive director for a local nonprofit organization. I didn't enjoy it, and we didn't want to put my son in daycare. So we put everything we had into making my hobby my job, and it has totally paid off! I now have a job that I absolutely love, and I have made some absolutely amazing friends in the last 3 1/2 years! I also recently accepted the position of online editor for the Beading Daily online community (http://www.beadingdaily.com), so I get the best of both worlds: I get to work for a fabulous company, writing about what I love the best: beads!

What other hobbies do you have?
My husband and son and I love to be outdoors, so we spend a lot of time hiking in the woods, fishing, canoeing and gardening. I used to do some glass fusing and some lampwork glass beadmaking, but had to cut back on that because I didn't have enough time to devote to it. I also love music, playing the piano and violin, and watching movies.

Would you like to tell us a little bit more about you?
I'm also a fabulous (vegetarian) cook! I love spending time in the kitchen, fixing yummy meals for my family and friends. I've always said that if the whole bead artist thing didn't work out, I was going to open a 5-star vegetarian restaurant here in the Adirondack mountains. But for now, the bead artist thing seems to be working pretty well for us!

Very nice creations in the style of weaving which look unusual from the regular band wagon...I would much prefer these over gold and diamonds.
